On Metallic Smiles

I had to ask my orthodontist, Luciane, why this sudden braces fever. Everywhere you look in Porto Alegre, you will see people wearing metallic smiles. Clic clic.

My dentist said that this is all because of the great number of university students fresh out of college who need a job, and the profusion of specialization courses available out there.

She also said something about the Cultural Industry - the Internet, magazines, TV/Movies and Aesthetics - imposing new styles. Crooked teeth? No way! Darkened teeth? No can do.

  1. mauro: i am convinced that braces are to the new century what lacoste was for the seventies, armani for the eighties, gucci and tom ford for the nineties and, well, there is no more! i lived my entire young life afraid of braces, when they were big wire contraptions with elastic things that made you look remotely (some) like an alien (not immigrants), the good old days...

  3. Braces were introduced in the 80's and because of its high price and not covered by insurance, it became a status symbol for the "well to do and the super rich" in the country (USA). i have seen this trend when my nieces and nephews were all wearing them (they are moneyed you know. i was so amazed by why these people would wear something that would make them look like "franktenstein" but i guessed it was the fad at the time.
i remembered my father massaging my gums pretty much on a daily basis when i was growing up and i could not figure out what the hell his doing and one day he explained the reason why...so my teeth would correctly lined up. we did not have the technology back in the sixties. Presently, the insurance and government assistance cover this procedure, and that is why we see a lot of this so called BRACES all over...Economics and Vanities ring a bell?
